Historiques American 1921
For those that aren’t familiar with the Historiques American 1921, the watch is not only based on a watch Vacheron made in the 20s—as the name would suggest—but is also one of the coolest driving watches ever made—in my opinion anyway.
For Watches and Wonders 2021, Vacheron has released two white gold variations—a 36.5mm model boasting a red leather strap and another 40mm watch with a brown accompanying leather strap—and another more luxurious 40mm platinum model on a deep blue leather strap.
But don’t worry, apart from the case material—and a few tweaks to the finishing on the dial, mostly made to tie the watch back to the original—the watch stays mainly the same for 2021. It still has the cushion-shaped case with the crown at would have been two, the iconic offset dial with large small seconds counter—used to make reading the time while driving easier and safer—and the trusty hand-wound Calibre 4400 AS, which has a 65-hour power reserve and a 28,800 vph beat rate.
Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin
Last year, Vacheron Constantin unveiled the Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin in rose and yellow gold. It was a beautiful watch that was made even more mesmerising with the addition of a skeletonised model. This model allowed you to see the inner workings of the perpetual calendar with a glance down at the wrist.
This year—similar to the Historiques American 1921—Vacheron has opted to update the watch with white gold. I don’t know what it is about the blue/white gold combo, but the combination really works. The white gold is also more subtle than its rose-gold counterpart, and thankfully, the Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin is still available in either the regular or skeleton option.
Just like before, the Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin comes with not one, but three straps—a rubber, a leather and the iconic Overseas bracelet in white gold—and has the automatic Caliber 1120 QPSQ/1 beating away at its heart. The Caliber 1120 QPSQ/1 boats a 19,800 vph frequency and a 40-hour power reserve. The movement can be seen through a display case back—on the blue dial version—and through both the skeletonised dial and sapphire case back on the skeleton model.
Don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten about the Vacheron Constantin Traditionnelle Split-Seconds Chronograph Ultra-Thin—that watch deserves an article of its own!
